Apple has said it themselves, they discovered a flaw in the software that displays two more bars then actually should be showing on the iPhone’s signal display. We are pretty sure they did that on purpose when the first iPhone came out to show that it was superior to every other phone out there with the best signal.
Now with the 4.0.1 update, they said they were shocked to discover this error and after applying the update, your iPhone should properly display how much signal you really have. It’s not a pretty picture. In almost all cases, you will LOSE two bars, so instead of 5 bars, you will have 2-3 bars. ALSO, they quietly extended the height of the bars, making them look taller. Before if you had one bar, there was basically nothing…now if you have one bar it looks like you have decent signal. It’s all a trick to make BAD signal look better.
Who is ready for Verizon?

Great information! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks!
